The unusual history of Bozo the Clown

The Unusual History of Bozo the Clown – attempting to unravel who did what when in the creation of “Bozo, the World’s Most Famous Clown”

(Editor’s note: for fans of Bob Bell’s rendition of Bozo the Clown, WGN-TV will be showing Special: Bozo, Gar & Ray: WGN TV Classics, on Christmas Eve from 7-9 pm Central Standard Time, and again on Christmas Day from 2-4 pm, “A look back at three of WGN’s most beloved television series, “Bozo’s Circus,” “Garfield Goose and Friends” and “Ray Rayner and His Friends.” )

Bozo the Clown - child kissing his noseMost clowns are created and performed by one individual. There are exceptions, of course, such as the Harlequin, a character from the Comedia del Arte. A more contemporary exception is Bozo the Clown, who is owned, copyrighted, and trademarked property of Larry Harmon. But although Mr. Harmon has done an admirable job of marketing Bozo the Clown worldwide, the story of Bozo does not begin with him. Instead, it begins at Capitol Records, in 1946. Read More…

Bozo boppers

Bozo boppers - inflatable boxing gloves for use with the Bozo Bop Bag

In a nutshell, the Bozo boppers are no more than inflatable boxing gloves, designed for use with the Bozo bop bag (or Bozo punching bag, as I tend to call it).  That’s it.  Cute, funny, large and clownish, protecting little hands.  A pity they don’t come in adult sizes or they’d make an excellent clown prop 🙂 Read More…

buy-from-amazon If there’s one toy that people associate with the Bozo the Clown show, it’s the Bozo Bop Bag.  (Around my house, we also called it the Bozo the Clown Punching Bag, but it’s technically the Bozo Bop Bag.  I guess it’s wrong to punch someone, but okay to bop them?)

Bozo Grand Prize Game

Bozo Bucket Bonanza–Grand Prize Game

Bozo the Clown - Bucket Grand Prize Game

buy-from-amazon One of my favorite parts of WGN-TV’s Bozo the Clown show was when Bob Bell, aka. Bozo the Clown, would do the Grand Prize Game. with a boy and a girl from the studio audience.  There would be six buckets in a row, and the contestant would throw a ping pong ball into the nearest bucket, and win a small prize.  They would attempt to throw the ping pong ball into the second bucket, and win a larger prize, and so on.  It’s much harder than it sounds, since the further the ping pong ball was tossed, the more difficult the toss—and the more likely it was to bounce out.
